the reality of your content
Most people think that watching reality TV is just a mind-numbing activity. And yes, I definitely see that side of the argument but reality TV can actually teach us a lot. In this guide I relate “Vanderpump Rules”, “Temptation Island” and “Married at First Sight” to some key principles of your content strategy.
Consistency
We tune into our favorite reality shows each season because we know the formula. We know that strangers will get married, a guys trip will start a crazy rumor or that someone will leave the island with a new boyfriend or girlfriend.
By paying attention to the right metrics such as likes, comments and shares, you can consistently create content that your audience knows and wants from you. Building trust with similar themes and topics will go a long way.
If you’re a foodie, share content such as food, recipes or “best of” lists. If you’re a traveler, share content like gorgeous photography of the places you visit and include travel tips. If you’re a career coach, establish yourself as a thought leader with advice and how-to examples. These are just a few examples but focus on why people started following you in the first place and don’t veer off from what you’re good at. A content calendar is a great tool for planning your posts - I can create one for you!
Purpose
When thinking of your content purpose, think of the confessionals that happen in every reality show. The ones where Katie Maloney-Schwartz tells us why she’s not talking to Scheana Marie or why they decided to risk everything to find true love. As silly as it may be, that’s purpose.
When creating your content, remember the purpose.
Why am I creating this?
Who do I want to engage with it?
What channels make the most sense?
Don’t just create content and expect it to perform itself.
A great way to make your purpose clear is to make a stellar caption or description. These are enhancers to your content just like a confessional is to an episode. Without one, no one knows why you’re sharing this content. On social specifically, it helps to go behind-the-scenes and show personality like Lala Kent!
Instagram has a tricky algorithm where your posts won’t show up in the feed unless the user has interacted with your post before. A longer, engaging caption will encourage the user to stay on your post for a longer period of time and maybe even explore your profile. Worth a shot!
Engagement
Content that doesn’t include some sort of engagement is a bad move. There is too much content out there for yours to fall flat. I’m not talking about Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright’s engagement or the non-existent ones on “Married at First Sight” either...
Your content should be engaging where you ask your audience thoughtful, relevant questions, partner with someone producing similar content to grow your network and host giveaways and contest (great for a follower campaign too!).
I told you reality TV has some hidden gems!
Create content that’s as consistent as James Kennedy’s mess-ups.
Create purposeful content + captions that help drive your content home.
Create content that makes your audience engage.
